Get a heads up on active window displays
Technology has come a long way in the automotive industry, and it’s still racing ahead with more exciting, innovative ideas today. Heads-up displays, or HUDs, were originally earmarked for the military, yet in our instant society, with more needs requiring fast solutions, this technology is taking a sharp bend into the everyday driver.
A heads-up display is a digital transparent image that projects onto the windshield of a car, providing the driver with crucial information that doesn’t steer their attention away from the road. Information, such as current speed, driving direction, remaining fuel, low visibility weather, the revs on the engine, various temperature gauges, and location is all provided. More advanced systems include turn-by-turn navigation instructions via satellite. Not only does a heads-up display benefit drivers with key information, enhancing their experience on the road, but having it all projected right in front of their eyes allows for better concentration and greater improved road safety.
With so many distractions in the car nowadays, from ringing phones, to blaring SatNavs, to incessant radio flicking, the heads-up display is the perfect solution to eradicate this. With an all-in-one system, drivers won’t be staring down at the radio or fumbling with their phone in their lap. Instead, they can keep an eye directly ahead of them while also acknowledging the call from their mother-in-law, navigation, and which tune will settle the kids in the back.
Heads-up displays are only going to get better with time. Forbes.com states, ‘As good as HUD is in 2015, by 2020 we’ll see active glass capable of displaying vibrant images.’ HUDs are being installed in new car models, such as the 2016 Audi A7, the Mercedes S55, and many more vehicles under the GM umbrella. Automakers including Jaguar, Hyundai, and Land Rover are showcasing next-generation HUDs that can flash warning signals before an accident is likely to take place, highlight street signs around the car, and display precise directions on the roads ahead.
