But the Display is too Expensive!
How many times have we heard that? So what starts off as the Engineers dream gets pared down – usually by the Marketing group saying it’s just too expensive. That slick new look and feel reverts back to what was done before…
Recently we looked at the front panel costs of a typical consumer product, basically consisting of a principle pcb with all the main circuitry and a front Panel pcb holding the user interface components. This consisted of about 12 Tact type switches a very affordable 7 segment LED display and 4 or 5 LED’s. This was all driven by about 25 transistors and a selection of passive components. Finally a connector and ribbon cable was used to link to the principle pcb.
The actual LED display component was only a small fraction of the cost of the whole front panel.
This set us thinking. What if we used a small Touch Screen TFT? Using the Flexi pcb supplied with the TFT it could be connected directly to the principle pcb. The Touch Panel could replace all the switches, and the indicator LED’s would not be required.
So the whole front panel assembly could be replaced functionally by a single TFT Touch Panel Module.
Result – a modern user interface, an easier to assemble (so cheaper) product AND an Engineers Dream!
And the cost, contact us to find out?
