LCD Technology

 

We can supply a wide range of either Graphics displays, or fixed segment/icon displays in a wide range of technologies to suit every application. You can have either negative mode, defined as a light segment/graphic on black/dark background or positive mode, a dark/black segment or graphic on a lighter/ white background.

Passive LCD Structure and Function

TN

Ideal for segment type applications with simple low duty requirements, typical 1/1-1/4 duty. Appearance and viewing angle typically limits the application in today’s market. Available in positive or negative mode, a low cost technology for basic display applications.

ETN

Low cost LCD technology, has a dye in the LCD fluid which increases the contrast in negative mode displays giving improved background appearance. Like TN this suits low duty application 1:1 -1:4 duty, maximum 1;8 duty. Suits wide temperature versions.

HTN

Incorporates the low cost advantages of TN technology, however it offers a greater viewing angle and therefore better appearance for the final product, not quite as good in appearance as STN technology.

STN

Allows greater viewing angles and higher multiplex ratios, 1:8 to 1:32 duty there is compromise over appearance, this technology is normally available in STN green, blue or grey, the contrast although better than HTN. The segments or graphics on the STN Grey may have a blueish tinge to them which is not for all applications. Also has much faster response times at around 300ms.

FSTN

This encompasses the advantages of STN, currently reflects where the market generally wants to be. FSTN offers wide viewing angles, suits high duty ratios of up to 1:240 and a pale/white background with apparently darker graphics in transmissive and transflective versions.

FFSTN

Negative mode double film technology for black background with wide viewing angles, on graphics displays.

ASTN

Normally an automotive product, this is available as a positive or negative mode technology. Advanced LCD fluid allows good stable contrast over a much wider temperature range. It can support higher duty rations 1:8 to 1:136 in some versions.

VA

Latest generation in negative mode technology, this is for segment/icon displays. In low duty applications this offers complete all round viewing angles without colour inversion. 1:1-1:4 duty, higher duty versions are available > 1:32 with only some compromise on viewing performance. This technology offers long term supply and lifetime advantages, with an appearance as good as or better than alternative display technologies due to its high >500:1 contrast Ratio. Coloured backlights or filtered areas can provide colour segments.

EBN

Alternative negative mode technology, for segment/icon display. Suitable for home appliance and automotive type application, where an all-round viewing angle without colour shift is important. Contrast is very high >800:1 at static duty. Product is available in up to 1:1 – 1:16 duty options.

Bi Stable (BCN)

Low power, ultra-thin and lightweight reflective technology, features such as high contrast, a wide viewing angle, and readability under sunlight. Display will hold an image for a long time without refresh and without image burn. Available as positive or negative mode in graphics or segment in a range of colours.

Custom Lcd Modules

Many of the modules you receive from Selectronic will be custom designed for you. Here is the typical Mono LCD custom design process:

  1. Most mono LCD projects will start from a blank paper. Selectronic are deeply involved in product development at very early stage – delivering innovating technical and engineering advice to achieve best performance/price solution
  2. Counter drawing within 1 week after technical spec accepted
  3. 4-6 weeks engineering sample lead time after drawing approval
  4. 6-8 weeks mass production lead-time

LCD Design Parameters

Polarizer types

There are 3 main types of display, Transmissive, transflective and reflective, selection of the polarizer type will be influenced by you products environment and power availability. Reflective is most suited to low power environments with some form of permanent light source, Transflective working best in higher brightness applications where the reflective feature helps overpower the sun with the backlight and offers ability for viewing in poor/dark conditions. Transmissive where a backlight is required due to the technology requirements.

Backlights

Most LCD panels we supply come with a backlight, this can be either specified by Selectronic as part of our custom LCD Module service or we can supply LCD panel only for the customer to fit their own backlight. Most LCD panels utilize LED backlights, some older models may use CCFL backlights however these are no longer designed in for new products generally. A diffuser is used to remove inconsistences in LCD brightness. A small LCD will be OK with a single LED if power consumption is important, larger panels will require either edge lighting with multiple LED’s to provide the specified brightness requirements.

Viewing direction

With every step forward in technology viewing direction becomes less important to some applications, especially with technologies like OLED and Selectronics VA technology. For lower cost types like TN and STN it’s still important to maximise the viewing angle for your product. The illustration be low referrers to how you should define your requirements.

Connectivity

LCD Connectivity is normally set by the end users display functionality and product package requirements. We can offer a wide range of options to suit any application. Most LCD panels are either utilizing Pin connection, soldered straight on to PCB by the customer or Flex connection which is a more straight forward solution for small to medium volumes and offers a more compact design, for high volume production we can also provide hot bar solder flex type.

Communication

For higher multiplex or graphics designs an IC can be added on either the LCD panel (COG) offering the most economical and robust approach. Alternatively, the IC can be mounted on a PCB on the rear of the display (COB), this can incorporate special connectors or components for the customer’s specific requirements. For small displays the flex mounted or TAB offers compact design where space for components is at a premium in the design. The choice of IC is governed by how you wish to communicate with LCD. We can offer custom displays with an interface of your choice best suited to your application.
